Reflection:
While my research focused on fashion magazines, not directly relevant to my pastry magazine project, it provided valuable insights into the use of design elements like fonts and colors to target specific audiences. Analyzing my notes, I learned how different visual choices cater to distinct demographics. Applying this newfound knowledge to my Christmas pastry magazine targeting high-spirited families, I can now make informed decisions on typographies, layout, and overall design to effectively represent and attract my intended audience.

This is my unit test that I did in class where I had to write a response to how different target audiences are targeted by the media according to their demographics and psychographics.

Audience are targeted by the media using different technical elements such as through demographic and psychographic. I’ve chosen age, gender and interest to identify the different target audience from Women’s Health USA magazine and BOXING magazine.

Firstly, for Women’s Health USA magazine; issued on October/November 2023 is a magazine that often features topics related to fitness and nutrition specifically for Women as the Masthead itself connotes it’s literal meaning of a woman’s healthy lifestyle specifically in USA. This helps them target a more specific target audience of female gender by having Tunde Oyeneyin featured in the Main image, by using representation theory made by Stuart Hall, Tunde represent a strong and independent woman, the cowboy shot used helps supports the bravery aura the Tunde holds. For the age itself would be around 20-30 years old as featured in the coverline of tips and tricks on how to maintain a health and balance lifestyle through the consumption of protein during your workout session. The typography used helps gets readers attention as the size is capitalized as well as the alignment of text that circles around the main image. For the interest, this magazine targets specifically those who’s interested in topics of conscious womans mind on beauty, fitness and nutrition. By using the Uses and Gratification theory by Bulmer and Katz, readers would get a sense of social relationships between the star appeal featured as they would like to make a connection or to imitate the people they see on the magazine.

Secondly, for BOXING magazine issued on September 19, 2019 - where they target male audience, this can be supported by the main image featured as its shown a muscular boxing athlete which blood splattered in its eyes. This will surely attracts male as main image is shotted from a low angle medium shot will connotates the feeling of power. The age would be around 25-35 as men around that age would find boxing matches intertaining as featured in the cover line of scoring on previous matches. Following the Desensitisation theory, this will make readers feel less horror on the content shown in the media as they’ve consumed too much of the same content which then make them numb to it and so those who find this magazine entertaining will not be in shock from the images that will be featured. For interest, readers who’s passionate about the sport itself might read this magazine as followed by the Cultivation theory made by George Gerbner in the surveillance part, they’ll be gathering information about upcoming events or even scoring on the previous matches.

In conclusion, both magazine targets different age, gender and interest for their readers. By featuring different main image and coverline to help guide their interest and tha thelps identify theri age.

My teacher's feedback:
- Why does the typeface appeal to women? Is it feminine? What colour is it? What connotations?
- You have used too many theories, one is enough per paragraph. I think you have misused cultivation theory, desensitisation, Uses and gratification
- the feeling of power. Connect it to the audience.
- social relationships  Personal Identity
